Fleas and ticks are some of the most common parasites we see in dogs and can cause some severe illnesses not to mention irritation of your pet’s skin.

How can I tell if my dog has fleas or ticks?

Dogs with fleas tend to scratch and be itchy and maybe even be missing fur.

How can I prevent fleas and ticks on my dog?

There are many excellent products, both oral and topical that prevent and treat both fleas and ticks on dogs very efficiently. Shampoos and sprays and collars are almost never used anymore for treatment or control as they are very ineffective and require a lot of work. It is also essential to ensure that all dogs and cats in the family home are treated and on preventatives as this will stop re-infestation.

What are the treatment options for dogs who have ticks?

Dogs with ticks should have the parasite carefully removed and be put on either oral or topical preventive immediately. Six weeks after exposure, a blood test should be done to make sure the tick has not infected your dog with a tick disease such as Lyme disease.
